Turns out there was no CGI in that tray scene in Spider-Man – it was all Tobey Maguire Read
Remember that iconic Spider-Man scene when Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker is coming to grips with his new powers and he catches love interest Mary-Jane Watson mid-fall in the middle of the cafeteria?
Using his webslinger, he also manages to catch her tray along with the sandwich, apple, carton of juice, and dessert that were precariously balanced on top.
It was impressive in 2002 and it’s still impressive now but we’ve just discovered that star of the film Tobey actually managed that slight of hand all by himself and with no CGI trickery – and in only 156 takes.
Now THAT is impressive.
DVD commentary for the film has come to light that has John Dykstra, an American special effects artist, talking about the scene.
In the video he can be heard telling fans:’This gag when he catches all this stuff, he actually did that… take 156!’
In another commentary Kristen Dunst, who played MJ in the trilogy of films, also confirmed John’s revelations, adding:’No CGI, that’s all Toby, they put sticky glue stuff to stick his hand to the tray.’
Ok so he had a little bit of help but he still had to catch all four items – have you ever tried to do the water bottle challenge?
